How to Check Your Doorbell Wiring Voltage With a Multimeter

Verify your existing doorbell transformer's output to ensure it meets the power requirements of your new video doorbell and prevent hardware damage.

What You'll Need

Steps

Step 1: Set the Multimeter

Turn your multimeter dial to the AC Voltage setting. This is typically indicated by a 'V' with a wavy line above it; ensure you are not using the DC setting, as doorbell transformers output alternating current.

Step 2: Access the Wiring

Remove the existing doorbell button from the wall using a screwdriver. Gently pull the button away from the wall to expose the two wires connected to the terminals.

Step 3: Isolate the Wires

Loosen the screws and detach the two wires from the doorbell button. Ensure the wires are separated and not touching each other or any metal surfaces to avoid short-circuiting.

Step 4: Position the Probes

Place one multimeter probe on each of the two exposed wire ends. Since AC current has no polarity, it does not matter which probe touches which wire.

Step 5: Read the Voltage

Observe the digital display on the multimeter. The reading will show the voltage currently being supplied by the transformer to the doorbell chime and button.

Step 6: Compare Against Specifications

Compare the multimeter reading to the 'Required Voltage' listed in your new video doorbell's manual. Most smart doorbells require between 16V and 24V AC to function correctly.

Step 7: Restore the Connection

Once the measurement is complete, reconnect the wires to the terminals or prepare the wiring for your new device installation. Ensure all connections are tight and secure.
